Welsh Education: Parental anguish as the D day approaches

Plaid Cymru-controlled Carmarthenshire County Council has been at war with Llangennech parents for over a year now in trying to impose Welsh Medium Education in local primary schools.

‘Consultation process’ is now over and this Wednesday (18th January 2017) it’s expected the Carmarthenshire Council vote will impose Council’s agenda and its will on people of Llangennech.

The parents who have shown a huge courage and determination throughout their dispute with the Council took an unusual step recently and have circulated the following document to all Councilors and other interested parties (Click on the image to enlarge):
Even at this stage, Carmarthenshire Council continues to use disinformation (Note the way the ‘consultation’ process was summarised by including 100’s of largely anonymous ‘Welsh language supporters’ and most living outside of the County of Carmarthenshire) and we should not forget the L1 Welsh kids who have been bussed in, in numbers to try and show a ‘Welsh language’ demand that doesn’t actually exist within the school’s catchment area!

Individuals behind the Council’s bullying of parents to accept Welsh Medium Education include Carmarthenshire’s Director of Education Mr Rob Sully, an army of Plaid Cymru’s Councilors lead by Cllr Gareth Jones, most of Llangennech School Governors headed by their Chairman (Tim Davies), School’s headmaster and most of the teaching staff, who all just happen to be the Welsh language 1 speakers!

Unusually for the Welsh media, the local papers (Llanelli Herald and Llanelli Star) provided a reasonable level of information of the issues but failed to challenge the wild and often inaccurate assertions as to the benefits Welsh Medium education endlessly spouted by the Carmarthen establishment and their supporters.

If the truth is to be told, there are ZERO benefits for the English-speaking children to undergo Welsh language immersion in the ever so crucial the early years learning period.

It’s interesting to note that the Welsh language immersion in primary education as used by many Welsh Local Education Authorities and often without parental consent is defined by UNICEF as SUBMERSION – Where L1 English kids are being educated in a language with inferior opportunities pretty much on a ‘sink or swim’ basis: Pure evil IMHO!

The damage is huge and lasting and supported by mountains of evidence provided by UNESCO, Save the Children Foundation, Welsh Government’s education statistics and other information available in the public domain.

I genuinely admire and support the effort and all the hard work Llangennech parents have done in their quest for justice and fair play but do have a fundamental disagreement with their notion that the dual stream education is win-win for all.

Dual stream education by implication demands ‘bilingual’ teachers in the Welsh language context only and excludes teachers who may be far better qualified to inspire and educate the young minds outside of the Welsh state sponsored Welsh language ideology.

I firmly believe that the only option available to the Welsh Labour Government and the Local Education Authorities in Wales is to respect parental choices and have the WM or EM education strictly based on quantifiable and genuine parental demand.

I’ll conclude with an extract from the recent British Council Wales Education Development Trust comment:

“The question of whether Welsh is a language that many parents would choose also needs to be addressed with a global perspective in mind.

Welsh is a language we should foster and encourage and never let die. It is, however, and will remain a minority language and the more it is forced onto people the less support it will receive”.

EISTEDDFOD 2016 “WEAPONISED WALES” Without the Welsh Language Wales is Nothing

WMD_world_map.svg

Not a ‘figment of my imagination’ but the heading statement came from the lips of Archdruid Geraint Lloyd Owen in defense of their decision not to allow the Welsh Football Team to be honoured by the Gorsedd at the Eisteddfod for its remarkable achievement in UEFA Euro 2016 competition.

Archdruid said: As most ‘Welsh’ football players do not speak Welsh; Eisteddfod standards must be kept, then elaborated further:

“If they can’t speak Welsh I don’t see how we can welcome them in [Gorsedd], because Welsh [Language] is the biggest, strongest weapon we have as a nation and without it, we have nothing”.

A truly bizarre statement that in my view is an affront to the non-Welsh speaking majority who by inference are nothing too!

This nonsense was then followed by the Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones who together with Alun Davies (Minister for the Welsh Language) used Eisteddfod 2016 as a platform in a sinister ploy to push the Welsh Labour Party’s Cymrufication agenda to the next stage:

Creating 1,000,000 Welsh speakers by 2050 that first appeared in a small print within the Welsh Labour’s Manifesto (2016 Assembly Elections) is now an official policy and seems to be highly ironic that the County of Monmouthshire that is perhaps more English than England has been chosen to signal that the English language and its culture is no longer relevant in the post-devolution Wales – Arrogance?

1984 for real: Death of English Medium Education for primary school pupils in Wales

jp1

The Welsh Labour Government wants ONE MILLION Welsh speakers by 2050 and to do so is planning to eliminate English language teaching in primary schools, what are the implications?

After 17 years of Labours’ dominance of Welsh politics their Social Engineering Agenda is finally in the open but anyone expecting a debate on the merits of dragging Wales back into the 13th century world or any scrutiny of such policies is going to be disappointed – Welsh Media does not tolerate dissent or any ‘disrespect’ of the Welsh language and its culture!

We are only days away from the Welsh Assembly elections and most of us have seen endless politico posturing and their promises of a better tomorrow to get our vote but none of the Party Political Broadcasts including the leader debates have ever touched upon the Welsh language imposition –   there is only a Deafening Silence!

Take the article following this extended preamble which has been ‘shamelessly plagiarised’ from BBC Wales’ web pages: “Welsh Labour to create One Million Welsh speakers by 2050” (BBC Wales has a habit of removing pages that may prove to be embarrassing to their cause).

The only external body invited by BBC to comment was the Welsh language pressure group (Cymdeithas yr Iaith), at best a looney organisation basing their ‘living’ upon a simple premise “Every child born in Wales has an entitlement and a birth right to speak Welsh”

Putting aside the sheer madness of their stance and unreserved support of anything Welsh or Cymraeg as they call it, BBC Wales doesn’t say, or asks how One Million Welsh speakers are going to be created.

Welsh Education: Children betrayed by the Welsh Labour Government

In most developed countries, success in life is generally based on the quality of education one gets as a child, but in Wales, where the standard of education is beyond miserable, most children would do a lot better if they got expelled!

Image1

To put it all in perspective and how we got to this sorry state, we need to go back to the beginning of Welsh devolution when the Welsh Education became the sole responsibility of the Welsh Assembly Government.

The newly formed Welsh Labour Government didn’t take long to start dismantling the long established parity with the education system in England under the guise of creating an education system with a unique ‘Welsh Distinction’ that all successive education ministers have followed blindly to this very day.

This unique ‘Welsh Distinction’ soon became synonymous with the Welsh language imposition on a scale that went far beyond anything that existed before in Welsh education. In recent years, primary school children in English-Medium education lose between 30 – 60% of the available teaching time on learning the Welsh language!  (Token Welsh was taught for years before the devolution to largely disinterested children and generally confined to circa 5% of the available teaching time with no apparent damage to kids or standards of their education – The only exception was Gwynedd which included Anglesey at the time and few schools in the Welsh speaking areas of West Wales).

The Welsh speaking nationalists took control of the Welsh Labour Party that has dominated Welsh politics ever since, and they have used the devolution as a stepping stone to promote and impose the Welsh language in education and public employment by any means irrespective of whether the measures used were legal or not.

That was beginning of the end for the Welsh education as we knew it and unquestionably the sole reason for the ongoing and near terminal decline of the Welsh education system.

The scheming nationalists must have known that any parity with the English education had to end and quickly as it wouldn’t have taken long to establish that the new Welsh language provisions were damaging children’s education through comparative tests that still existed at the time.

LIGHT A FIRE FOR WALES – Burn an English Home

mug350Mug Inscription: Taniwch Dros Cymru which when translated means ‘Light a Fire for Wales’, the motif shown depicts a Burning Home and to make sense in the Welsh context it must be an English home?

This is a chilling and sinister Welsh souvenir from the not so distant past and whilst the burning of English homes has stopped, Wales now has a new and an equally sinister order named ‘ENGLISH NOT’.

The Welsh Labour Government over the last 16 years has used its devolved powers to elevate a minority language and its culture through compulsion and diktat to a privileged position.

The better informed but gagged and silenced people of Wales see this as a Social Engineering concept not seen in Europe since the Stalinist era and for some very good reasons:

It’s now no longer possible for the lesser equals (Non Welsh speakers circa 80% +) to hold most of the public jobs or to educate their children THROUGH THE MEDIUM OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE (The parental freedom of choice to choose educational language for their children in primary years has been or is being removed by the Local Education Authorities on Anglesey, Gwynedd, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire)

This policy has been fully endorsed by the Welsh Government and by Estyn also and is now a format planned for the rest of Wales.

These measures appear to have the full blessing of BBC Cymru Wales (note the order!) and other Welsh media who will say and do anything to suppress, sanitise, and squash an open debate on this subject.

Perhaps we should not be surprised that anything that matters or should matter in Wales is in a downward spiral; including standards in Education, the NHS and the Economy (Is a common link the Welsh Language)?

The people of Wales should take the heed of Gwyn Thomas and what he had to say on this subject some 30 years ago.

Finally and back to the contemporary Wales, came across a fascinating assessment of Welsh Government’s Orwellian world by Natalie Solent on Samizdata web pages and well worth reading:
